God vs Big Government

"Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
Matthew 25: 34

Paying your taxes does not satisfy this admonition of Jesus Christ.  Big government hardly qualifies as one of the least of these my bretheren.

If you are thinking that the government using your tax dollars to provide the "least of these my bretheren" with welfare, social security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other assistance will help you merit Christ's invitation to join him in his Father's kingdom you will have a hard time.

Paying taxes isn't bad.  After all Jesus did say, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s." (Mark 12:17)  However, it does not, and can not take the place of directly giving service to those in need around you.  Government aid also makes us a faceless society.  The person who receives your tax dollars in the form of food stamps doesn't know you, they don't appreciate you, and you don't know them.  They don't feel your good intentions, and you can't feel their gratitude.  Then again maybe your tax dollars went to bail out a bank and is now paying a bank executive's salary.

Just for good measure.
 Matthew 25: 33-46

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life

Saving the GOP: God's Advice

There has been a lot of discussion and soul searching recently about how to save the Republican Party.  I have been thinking about it quite a bit myself, and on Sunday a scripture came to mind that can help if we follow its guidance correctly.  Matthew 16: 25

25.  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it:  and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26.  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

For a little clarity on how to apply those words I will also recommend Matthew 25: 37-40.

37.  Then sall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38.  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in?  or naked, and clothed thee?
39.  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40.  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

It is my opinion that the Republican Party, as well as the United States of America were both founded upon the principles including the ones found in those verses.  Any real and lasting rescue of the Party and the Nation will need to rely of those same ideals.

The GOP has periodically gained the whole world, in political terms on a couple of ocasions only to lose it again because it had lost its soul in the process.  Recently, we had the House, the Senate and the Executive Branch of government, but too many of the people holding those offices had forgotten our founding principles and the purpose for our existence.  I mean really, do you feel like what is going on in Washington is for your benefit?  I really don't think my Senators and Congressman flipped open their wallets and looked at a picture of me before they voted for the bailout bill.  The Republicans didn't start their out of control spending for my sake.  The ones that became embroiled in scaldals certainly didn't do so for their constituent's benefit.

If we and our leadership want to save the GOP we need to be willing to lay down the instinctual desire to survive at any cost.  We need to be willing to give up what we think will bring us power, and we need to do it for the Lord's sake.  In other terms we need to stop fighting for an empty shell of a party and start fighting for the people and principles that the party was designed to protect and serve.  Every time I hear people talk about changing the message of the party, or cutting off different parts of it that makes me consider whether those people are fighting for anything real, or are they just fighting for power and control.  Most Americans don't care if you or your party are in control.  It doesn't matter to them.  What does matter is what you and your party do and how it will effect them.

The Republican Party's original message isn't broken.  The way we present it needs work.  In addition our elected an appointed leaders have often failed to adhere to it.  That is what is broken.  The original message needs to be reapplied to us and our situation today.  Have we changed to where we are no longer anti-slavery, but are pro-slavery?  NO!  So then why did we let our elected leaders get away with contributing to this Nation and even its individual citizens being sold into the bondage of debt?  The same can be said of all our party's founding principles.

We need to get personal.  Government and political parties exist for the people, not their own power.  The GOP was founded for the purpose of freeing and empowering people.  Freedom and control of one's destiny are basic human desires that can appeal to almost anyone.  Those ideals got this party started and they can keep it going.  Lets not loose the soul of the GOP while trying to revive it, if we do we will be left with something not worth having, and it won't do the people of this country any good.  Its time to give the soul of the GOP back to the people.

Its Time to Get Personal

Hey everyone, it is time to get personal, and I mean that on every level.  What is impersonal?  Unions are impersonal.  A lot of charities, PACs, special interest groups, political parties, and other "causes" are impersonal.  Government aid is impersonal.  Mortgages becoming more impersonal due to the mortgage crisis.  Mutual funds are impersonal.  Really there are a lot of things that are impersonal and to the extent that we can avoid them or we can inject a degree of personalization into them we should.

Going Red

The Liberals in our country have been working hard, and now their payoff is in sight.  America is going Red, one way or another we are on track to get there, and get there fast.  We are only a short time away from being a Communist country and the main question left is how?  Will we go Communist through our own laws, or will another country take us over and cause us to go Communist that way?  Either way the Liberals and those who have aided them or turned a blind eye to their activities have earned it.  It's a pity, but I don't think many of them are going to enjoy it when it is here.

There is a thought that has going through my mind concerning these bailouts, and the government's encroachment on the private sector.  I wonder if some in the government have considered voting for these bailouts because that way at least these industries will still be American owned and not owned by some foreign power.  That logic seems to be greatly flawed to me.  What are we afraid of in another country taking us over?  That we would loose our governnent and way of life?  We are already doing that on our own.  Why not let China take over and do it for us?  At least they have more experience with the whole Communism thing.

Choose your poison Communism from within or Communism from without.

Then again we could just stop this whole debacle and start acting like Americans again.  Working hard, making good choices on our own, and being involved citizens.  Holding our noses and waiting till the next election will not cut it.  We have to be involved in our families, workplaces, schools, communities, and government now.  America is not a Communist country, but it seems like a lot of Americans need to be reminded of that right now.

Choose your poison Communism from within or Communism from without.

If we don't get involved and speak out we will have it one way or the other.

Separate but Equal

I have heard several times durring the course of the Proposition 8 debate and aftermath that "Separate but Equal" never works.  They are trying to create similarities between the struggle for racial equality and the current homosexual movement.  They are of course way off base and must distort history as well as the current reality in order to create these parallels.  However, with one slight amendment I do agree with the statement that "'Separate but equal' never works."

Separate but equal never works when it is a lie.

Failure and the loosers

Big Three Automakers

When they fail, we loose.
When we try to hide or ignore their failure, we stay lost.
A loss has been thrust upon us.
Lets try not to be loosers for too long.

A More Conservative Tone

I noticed that one of the complaints against Sarah Palin was that her language and communication skills made her sound uneducated.  She sounded like a folksy backwater mom that couldn't string words together in complete sentences.  At least that is how the elite Washington intellectuals made it sound.  Honestly, I think that a national politician should be able to speak the language well enough to understand and be understood in Washington. However, they are not there to represent Washington they are there to represent us, so I think it is just fine for them to speak like a regular person as well.  Especially when they are out talking to us, and not heads of state or other dignitaries.

One thing that does bother me far more than a candidate speaking in their local vernacular is when their language becomes vulgar and obscene.  I would rather have a civil country bumpkin in office that mispronounces some words, than a foul mouthed intellectual that pronounces obscenities and insults with precision.   We have tossed civility out the door in politics. As long as the insult sounds clever and witty it is ok, but simple kindness and politeness are no longer en vogue.

A conservative change would be for conservative politicians in every level of government to cut back, not just on spending but also on the foul language and rudeness that they bring to the political process. I had a tenth grade English teacher that also happened to be a state representative.  It was rather enlightening when I heard some politicians discussing her performance in the statehouse and the type of language she used. I didn’t have nearly as much respect for her after that, and I can’t say I am too surprised that she lost her bid for re-election this year. She may have been a Republican, but when it comes to her choice of words she was not the least bit conservative.

There are some places were insults, cursing, and other bad language don’t really belong.  Those places include the news media, schools, and government. However, we have let them in anyways, and they now seem commonplace.  It is time to reverse that trend, but lets do it the small government way, not the big government way.  We need to look at our own lives to see the type of language we use personally.  Then we need to look at the language being used in our homes.  Next we need to look at the language used in our workplaces, schools, and places we hang out.  Students don’t need to stop their whole school or university from swearing, but they can ask for better behavior from the people in their classes, especially their teachers.

If swearing and playground insults are no longer a part of our lives then maybe we will be a little more shocked and outraged when we see those in government or in the news using such language. Maybe we will actually react to it and let our representative know that we don’t want to be represented in that fashion.

Can Unions Help?

Can unions help the auto industry and even America as a whole?
I think they can.  But only if they do something counter intuitive and actually help their members.  By that I mean if they help their members keep their jobs by negotiating a pay/bennefit decrease, they will actually help their membership, the automakers, and the country.  There comes a point where the only way a union can really protect its members is to let go of some things.  The unions have spent decades securing a wish list for their members rather than the needs and rights of their members.  It is time to give back some of the wish list and when they do that the unions need to be careful to give back only wishes and not rights or needs.  Either that or the big three will eventually start going one of two ways.

   1. Government control

   2. Out of business

When either of those happens the unions won't really be able to do anything for their members.  The unions will help by giving back what they have unjustly taken or they will ultimately loose and so will their members.

Representatives and Senators

Representatives need us, the citizens for at least three vital functions.
  1. They need us to vote for them, in order to get the job in the first place.
  2. They need our taxes to pay their salaries, as well as to give them something to work with (or play with if we vote in the wrong people) as they do their job.
  3. They need us to let them know what we want and don’t want. With out us they have nothing to represent.
Basically these people can’t do anything on their own. All too often they forget that and so do we.  The fact is we will always be the one paying their salaries, but if we are not giving them marching orders then someone else is.  That means we are paying for some lobbyist or special interest to be represented in Washington while our voice is silent.  No matter who you vote into office it is a bad H.R. decision to pay your employees to work for someone else.

Edit:  I just wanted to add a fourth reason that is tied to the other three.

     4.  They need us to keep their souls.  If we don't contiunually reach out to our representatives in Washington D.C. they will become
lost to that place and its corruption.  We are the ones who have the power to clean out Washington.  No President, Congressman,
or Senator can do it.  It is in the citizens that will, or it will not happen.

House Cleaning

For everyone that says the Republican Party needed a house cleaning, I totaly agree.  That goes for both the national and state levels.

The only problem is that the Democrat Party needs one just as bad, or worse, but they didn't get it.

America is not about its Leaders

This is just the start of a thought I want to expand.  America never was about its leaders even though we have had some amazingly great people in leadership roles.  America was always about its citizens.  I am not sure if it is anymore though.  We only had great leaders because we had great citizens.  Citizens that were willing to stand firm on the solid principles that they believed.  Citizens that were willing to stake their future and integrity on innovative but risky endeavors.  And perhaps most of all citizens that recognized greatness in their fellow citizens, that allowed them to stand as examples for everyone and supported them in doing so.  That is how we managed to cultivate so many great leaders in this country.
Republicans could not field a winning candidate because they failed to be that type of citizen.  Democrats fielded a winning candidate because they want someone else to be a good citizen for them so badly that they ignored the long-term results.  They want to be individuals in this community rather than citizens in it.  Eventually they may realize that they will loose both if they give up the responsibilities of citizenship for too long.

America's Future

For the first time ever America and even the World has staked its future on a single man.

Have we made a hasty decision?  Yes.

Have we made a choice based in reality? Hardly.

Is it rational?  Not in the least.

Was it based on emotion? Totally.

Will we regret it?  Will there be buyer’s remorse?  Absolutely.

At least in the state of Delaware people came to the polls to vote for Obama and then voted down the line for Democrats regardless of how the candidates had performed in office or on the campaign trail. Politics were not local, they were national.

Is there a solution? Yes.

We need to figure out what principles and ideals we stand for. Then we have to stand up for ourselves.  This was a vote to abdicate the responsibility for upholding our principles, goals, and dreams from our shoulders to Barak’s.

People voted for Barak because he supposedly represents their Hope for America and the future.  He will not deliver.  He can not deliver on those hopes.  Our nation gave up its hopes and future into the hands of a single man that has no power to deliver unless we give it to him.  However, the people who handed him their future now want to turn their backs on it and go about their business, thinking that Barak will take care of everything. After all they already did their part by voting for him.  The rest of this game belongs to him not us is the attitude.

That attitude will result in a harsh awakening when Barak has to face that test in his first six months. However, for us the living, that attitude doesn’t hold water. This is our America, and We the People will continue to own it, and we will behave like it.  We will have eyes on these newly elected officials 24/7 to the best of our ability to hold them accountable to our will.  We will also continue to be productive in our jobs and involved in our communities.

I know I will also be present at as many sessions of my state and local legislature as I can. The State of Delaware swung overwhelmingly to the Democrat Party.  I know I will not be represented by them so I will be there when I can to do it myself. It will be tough as I am still a student as well as trying to keep my own business going, however if the paid representatives won’t do the job someone has to. Some of us may even have to run for office in the future if we wish to keep or regain our country.

Barak Obama may be the President for the next four years, however this is my America.  It would be the same if John McCain were elected.  This is my America. It does not belong to the President.  It belongs to us as citizens. We have to own it.

The problem with this vote is not who will be President for the next four years. It is what this vote says about who we will be as citizens.

Following?

The thing about conservatives is that we follow principles not people. All of our current “leaders” could endorse Obama and the conservative base would remain basically unchanged, unless there are real conservative principles behind it. Insomuch as a person lives by the principles we follow, we can accept their representation. However, I didn’t find anything in Colin Powell’s endorsement of Obama that really represented my principles. The same is true of all the so-called conservative leaders and thinkers that hopped on the Obama train. They can’t be conservative leaders if they don’t lead in a conservative direction.

Edit:  Yes, by definition leading people towards Obama can't be considered conservative.  It can be considered intellectual, but not conservative.  You can intellectualize your way into a lot of stupid and easily avoidable bad situations.  Many of these intellectuals are the same ones that helped foist McCain on us in the first place.  Now that they got their way they are leaving.  We can't follow people like that.  That is why I advocate following principles not people.   The principle will not change even if the people who once followed it do. Conservatism has to be grounded in something deeper than people who are so easily swayed.  Some of these “conservative intellectuals” that have endorsed Obama have admitted that they hope he is lying about his policies because they won’t be good for America.

Is that the kind of hope and change we want?

I think not, but I guess it is enough to satisfy the “conservative intellectual elite.”
Oh, and many thanks to Laura Ingraham for pointing out that not all intellectual conservatives are sheep trying to dress the wolf Obama like them.  You can be intelligent and conservative, in fact the two work really well together.

The VP Pick

So McCain picked his VP and I am actually pretty happy about the choice.  I am still a big fan of Mitt Romney and think he would have made a great running-mate, however as an actual VP I think he would have been underutilized.  I am sure that Mitt will continue working hard for Conservative Changes in this country, and within the GOP, and he may even be appointed to a cabinet possition.  Either way I look forward to seeing what he does.

What I have seen of Sarah Palin excites me just as much as Mitt Romney does, and I consider it a great thing that our party is not limited to just one conservative leader, but there are many of them that are working hard for this country.  I also look forward to seeing what Sarah Palin will do with this opportunity.  She has definitely brought some conservative change to Alaska's government, and to her party up there.  I hope she can do the same for the Presidential ticket.
